In a wider context Heerkens' pieces reflect on the theme of nature in the Netherlands. This is a man-made landscape where nature is virtually non-existent. The Dutch countryside is planned by architects and supervised like a safe, neutered theme park. This of course is a contradiction to any natural, unpredictable growth. Following that train of thought images arise: human movements like bending over to water some cultivated plants, swaying children on a garden swing, organic shapes pushing a plastic membrane outwards - like buds exploding through foil in a hothouse. Heerkens plays freely with suchlike associations in her jewellery.
